Kenilworth Wardens Colts 4 - 2 Banbury Irish
A great and deserved victory for the Colts this week over the same team we lost 2-nil to last week! The Colts twice came from behind in this match. It started with strong attacking from the Banbury Irish team which was met with good defensive work from our midfield and back three, Kyle only required to make a few easy stops. Unfortunately a Banbury attacker got through on one solitary occasion and was able to slot the ball home to put them in front. However the Colts stuck to their game and hit back through Guy's goal from a crowded penalty area. Half time came with the score at one goal each.
After half time another defensive lapse allowed Banbury to score their second goal - this one a 2 vs 1 attack that saw Kyle save the first shot brilliantly only to have the follow-up players put the ball in the net without interference from our defenders. Their lead was short-lived, however, as Guy's persistence in attack reaped dividends when he chased toward the Banbury goalie - who it must be said was not their regular goalie - who managed to fumble a simple pick-up allowing Guy to tap the ball into an empty net. We were level again.
Bouyed from this success the Colts team were fired up! There was much great calling for the ball and excellent passing play and backing up of players positions resulting in many great attacking moves the likes if which we haven't seen from Cotls before - they were a revelation! In one such attack a busy Banbury penalty area allowed David to score his first competitive goal for the team to great cheers from all those on the field and supporting from the sidelines. Banbury looked down and struggled to put any moves together for quite a while under continued Colts pressure. Another fine attacking move saw Guy score for his hat-trick, this time from just inside their penalty area.
We managed to sustain our defensive mindset and kept Banbury at bay with just a couple of chances going their way, forcing more excellent saves from Kyle when finally the Ref blew for the end of the match. A fantastic team effort and wonderful spirit was shown on the pitch today with the whole squad involved and excited by their own abilities!
